Spent £568 on KATSEYE tickets but denied entry at Co-op Live due to 16+ rule

Manchester – A night that was supposed to create beautiful memories turned into a nightmare for many families when they were stopped at the doors of the Co-op Live arena. The reason: children under 16 are not allowed to stand in the standing area – a rule that many who bought tickets through third parties were completely unaware of. A typical case is an unnamed parent who spent £568 (about 18.5 million VND) to buy four tickets through the Hellotickets platform, hoping to take their children to see the global girl group KATSEYE perform in Manchester – the group’s only stop in their 2026 tour. That evening, when the whole family arrived, they were told by security that their child was not old enough to enter the standing area, and the entire family was unable to attend. The parent later said: ‘We bought legal tickets, no one informed us about the age limit during payment. My child was sobbing when we had to leave the arena.’ For its part, a spokesperson for Co-op Live confirmed the incident and said that the rule ‘standing area only for guests aged 16 and over’ was clearly stated in the terms and conditions at the time of purchase on official ticketing platforms. They also said staff tried to help affected families by offering alternative seats where available, but could not accommodate everyone because of the large number of guests. However, the crux of the matter lies in the purchasing channel. Many families did not buy directly from the organiser but through intermediate sites such as Hellotickets or Viagogo. Another fan told the BBC that when calling Hellotickets to ask about the rule, they were told that the seller could not access the customer’s booking records – essentially passing the responsibility to Co-op Live. In contrast, Viagogo later said its customer service team had contacted the buyer to assist. This incident exposes a major gap in the ticketing chain: middlemen often do not display age restrictions or other important venue rules prominently before checkout. Customers think they are buying a full experience, but in fact they receive only a ticket with dozens of terms that no one reads. Although this is not a sporting event, the case serves as a hard lesson for the sports industry, where ticket management and fan rights are always a major challenge. Major venues like Co-op Live often apply similar policies to sports and concert events to ensure safety and licence compliance. But if the 16+ rule is mandatory, ticket sellers must take responsibility for prominently informing buyers from the very first step of the purchase process, rather than hiding the rule in lengthy terms. The fault cannot simply be placed on the consumer. As of now, it is unclear exactly how many parents and children were affected, nor what the total amount of refunds will be. Co-op Live has urged affected fans to contact them directly for review, while Hellotickets has not yet issued an official response. This story is a wake-up call for both event organisers and consumers: a ticket bought from a third party may not come with the promised rights if you do not read carefully. But the larger question is: why does a modern ticketing system place the burden of explanation on the customer – those who have paid with all their hearts?
