Marc Guehi in Midfield: Tactical Gamble or Warning Signal for Manchester City?

I have been following English football for 34 years. And I have never seen a team boldly experiment with a center-back playing in central midfield from the very first game of the season – unless they are hiding something.

Manchester City under Enzo Maresca have just confirmed their captaincy group for the new season: Ruben Dias as main captain, alongside Marc Guehi, Gianluigi Donnarumma, and Erling Haaland. Sounds stable. But the detail that made me stop: Marc Guehi – the 26-year-old English center-back – was deployed in midfield in the first game of the season.

The crowd will tell you this is a commendable tactical flexibility. Maresca wants to use Guehi's ball-playing ability to bypass opposition pressing. A center-back who can pass, who can control tempo – that's the trend of modern football, from Josko Gvardiol at the old Manchester City to William Saliba at Arsenal.

But I'm not buying that story.

Look at the bigger picture. Manchester City just let Bernardo Silva leave on a free transfer in the summer. They acquired Enzo Fernandez for a club-record fee from Chelsea on deadline day. Rodri – their most important player – has departed, creating a massive void in central midfield.

And Maresca's solution? Pull a center-back into midfield.

This is not a subtle tactical adjustment. This is a clear warning signal that Manchester City lacks a world-class central midfielder in their squad. They could not find a worthy replacement for Rodri. And instead of admitting that in the transfer market, they are trying to 'manufacture' a midfielder from a center-back.

Marc Guehi is an excellent center-back. But he is not a midfielder.

I have witnessed too many players being pulled out of their natural positions and never returning to peak form. Look at how Phil Foden was excluded from the leadership group – Maresca chose Guehi, former Crystal Palace captain, over Foden. That tells you Maresca values leadership qualities over pure talent. And in football, that is a double-edged sword.

I could be wrong. Maybe Guehi will become an excellent midfielder. Maybe Maresca is creating a new trend: the modern libero, who can surge from defense and control the game from midfield. But I have seen too many 'tactical revolutions' fail for one simple reason: players are not robots.

Look at Enzo Maresca. He is a young, ambitious coach, but directly appointing captains instead of letting the dressing room vote reveals one thing: he wants absolute control. In modern football, absolute control rarely lasts long.

A stadium without fans is just a parking lot painted grass-green. But Manchester City has fans, has pressure, has expectations. And when the season begins, Guehi in midfield will be the first hot spot every opponent will exploit.

I don't write to be loved, I write to be read. And what I read from this move is a Manchester City struggling to find itself after losing key pieces. The Guehi gamble might succeed, but if it fails, it will be the first crack in the Etihad wall.

Look at the early-season fixture list. If Guehi's weaknesses in midfield duels are exposed – a weakness I suspect when he moves away from the penalty area – then Maresca will face enormous media pressure. And in top-level football, pressure often turns 'revolutions' into 'disasters'.

A decade ago I trusted data. Now I trust my eyes. And my eyes see a team trying to patch a hole with an ill-fitting piece.
